How to combine regions by subtraction  

1. Click on the menu Modify  Regions boolean operations... Subtract.
2. Select one or more regions from which to subtract and press ENTER.
3. Select the region/s to subtract and press  ENTER.

   The areas of the selected regions (second selection) are subtracted from the areas of the first regions.
